044 compare 044 magnum (2024)

Can someone tell me the difference(s) between a 044 and 044 magnum stihl and the 046 and 046 magnum? Looking for ways other than a label to tell the difference between a magnum and non-magnum saw.

There are some real differences between the 044 and the 044 Magnum. Carburetor, base gasket, port timing and finish, decompression valve, self-advancing ignition- these are all things that were upgrades on the 044 Magnum.

I was sold by our regional sales rep that all 046s sold in North America were the "Magnum" designation. He said there were de-tuned 046s models intended for the European and Asian markets and those would have similar differences as to the 044 and 044 Magnum.

That true for the 066 as well? Because I'd always heard otherwise, that there was no real difference.

The 066 went through a series of cascading changes. In the early days the 'Magnum' designation got you the dual-port muffler, a larger jet in your carburetor, and the 0.5mm base gasket. EPA restrictions changed all that though.

Thanks to the EPA, the Magnum designation on current models means virtually nothing.

To think of all the saws on ebay that have magnum stickers, or alterations!

PS I have a couple that say magnum, but by what is fact! Only one might be!!!!

solo 680

Anyone have any info on a solo 680? I have a chance to pick one up cheap.

I heard they are pretty heavy and hard to find parts for?

I contacted Stihl because so many guys were saying their 044's were Magnums but didn't know what that meant. Here is the response:

When I asked if an 044 does not have a decompression button, it is not a Magnum - he said:

That would be a correct statement​

Guess most of those "Magnums" out there are just regular 044's with the $5 eBay sticker on them.

The 044 and 044M do have the same displacement (70.7ccs)and make the same amount of power (5.4HP). The difference is the decompression valve and the crankshaft was changed to incorporate a larger wrist pin.​

Unless they deleted the decomp then you would have to look under the hood
